Most haunted landmarks on earth

There are certain places on earth that really inspire fear and bring out the inner coward in everyone. Some say that these places were witnesses to the most gruesome of murders, suicides, and other grisly events. Most people don’t truly know the real reason why ghosts or spirits inhabit these places.
One thing’s for sure, though, these places will do their level best to scare you into hiding. So what are the most haunted places in the world? Here are all of them:

Highgate Cemetery
Besides having such famous people buried there as Karl Marx, Douglas Adams, and the parents of Charles Dickens, Highgate Cemetery has long been known for its ghosts, sinister activities, and other strangeness, including:
  • The most famous spook in this cemetery is The Highgate Vampire, who is not really a vampire in the classic sense, but a phantom that is described as a 7-foot-tall, dark male figure with piercing, hypnotic eyes and wearing a long black coat and high top hat; he seems to vanish into thin air. There have been several dozen sightings and encounters since the late 1960s.
  • A man whose car broke down near the cemetery came face to face with a ghoul with glowimg red eyes that peered at him through the graveyard's iron gates.
  • The ghost of an insane old woman has been seen racing among the gravestones, her gray hair flowing behind her as she searches for her children, whom she allegedly murdered.
  • A dark shrouded figure has been see standing stock still and staring into space. When it is approached, it vanishes then reappears a short distance away, still staring into the void.
  • A businessman was terrified by a phantom that jumped over the fence and landed right in front of him. He described it as having pointed ears, glowing eyes, and large nose. This might have been the infamous Spring-Heeled Jack.
  • The floating ghost of a nun has been seen passing over the graves.

Sallie House
The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas quickly earned a national reputation as one of the most haunted places in the U.S. -- almost certainly the most haunted in the state of Kansas. The rather simple-looking painted brick house at 508 N. Second Street, built between 1867 and 1871, gives no indication from the street of its spooky reputation, but the many experiences of those who lived there are have subsequently investigated the place testify as to its ghostly vibes -- mostly of the negative kind.
The house was brought to national attention when Debra and Tony Pickman lived there from 1992 to 1994 and had many distrubing encounters, including physical attacks on Tony, which were documented by the Sightings television show. It's called the Sallie house because the daughter of some previous tenents had an imaginary friend named Sallie, and she is beleived to be one of the spirits haunting the house. When Tony Pickman drew a picture of the ghost Sallie he had seen, the daughter identified it as her friend, Sallie. (Coincidentally -- or not -- people who owned the house in the 1940s had a daughter named Sallie, although she did not die in the house or at a young age.)
HAUNTING ACTIVITY
The Pickmans experience much phenomena, including:
  • Wall-hung pictures turned upside-down
  • Strangely melted candles and burnt finger marks
  • Multiple photo anomalies
  • Tony had an actual sighting of Sallie on Halloween morning, 1993
  • While napping, Tony heard of woman's voice say, "Here's your remote," as the TV remote control was placed on his chest by unseen hands
  • During the first Sightings taping, Tony received three bloody scratches on his arm
  • One night Tony dreamed that he was being pulled out of bed by his wrist by a little girl. Upon waking he found burn marks on his wrist that were much like the fingerprints of a small child.
The Kansas Parnaormal Group has extensively researched and investigated the Sallie House over the years and may be primarily responsible for labeling the haunting as "probably demonic" because of the many violent incidents.
The house continues to be a focal point for investigations by ghost hunting groups from all over the country, who report strange activity, EVP, and other phenomena. On Friday the 13th, 2012, a72-hour investigation was broadcast live on the internet, the replay of which you can find here.

  • There is an eerie cold spot in the Blossom Ballroom that is about 10 degrees colder than the rest of the room.
  • The ghost of a man dressed in white has been seen standing near a piano in the Blossom Ballroom. When guests approached the man, after hearing piano music, he vanished before their eyes.

Brief history: During Prohibition in the 1920s, the Moss Beach Distillery in Moss Beach, California became one of the most popular speakeasies on the West Coast when it was known as "Frank's Place," frequented by silent film stars drinking its illegal booze. After Prohibition, the place continued as a successful restaurant, which it remains today.
Ghosts: The Blue Lady is the Distillery's most famous ghost and has been investigated by such prominent ghost hunters as Loyd Auerbach as well as the Unsolved Mysteries TV show. According to legend, in the 1930s a beautiful young woman, possibly named Cayte, fell for a piano player of questionable character and they began an affair, even though she was already married. She was killed by an unknown assailant on the nearby beach, and it is thought that her spirit -- dressed in blue -- still searches for her lover.
Ghostly activity reported by guests and restaurant staff includes:
  • Sightings of the Blue Lady herself
  • A levitating checkbook
  • Doors that impossibly lock from the inside
  • Mysterious phone calls
  • Disappearing earrings that later show up in one place
  • Glassware moving
  • During his 1999 investigation, Loyd Auerbach reports that he experienced the ghost "walking through" him several times
  • Anomalous magnetic field and temperature changes.

General Wayne Inn
General Wayne Inn
Brief history: Numerous ghosts have been experienced and apparitions seen in this inn that had been in continuous operation since 1704. Originally called The Wayside Inn, it was renamed in 1797 after the Revolutionary War, and it has been visited by such notables of the time as George Washington and LaFayette. Many other famous guest have stayed there, including Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote part of his famous poem The Raven there. In 1996 owner Guy Sileo murdered co-owner James Webb on the third floor of the building on the day after Christmas in a dispute over finances. But it might have been Silio's mistress, Felicia, who killed Webb because he disapproved of the affair. Felicia later committed suicide.
Unfortunately, the inn closed around 2004 and and since been converted into the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, although "General Wayne Inn" is still displayed on the building's side.
Ghosts: The haunting activity reported in this building has been substantial over the years:
  • Women seated in a row at the bar would, in succession, feel someone blow on the backs of their necks.
  • The ghost of a German Hessian soldier was seen by a staff member standing on the steps leading upstairs before fading away. She reported that he seemed just as startled to see her as she was to see him.
  • Another Hessian soldier has been seen in the basement, said to be searching for his uniform, of which he had been stripped.
  • The crying of a little boy ghost has been heard.
  • Ghosts of an unknown Native American and African American men have been spotted.
  • Psychic Mike Benio claimed that he made contact with a Hessian soldier named Ludwig, who made several appearances to Benio and said he had been killed during the Revolutionary War.
  • In 1986, an owner named Johnson and a friend were seated in the dining room when they saw a woman in period dress rush past them.
  • Kitchen appliances and towels have been thrown about; doors that were securely locked at night were found unlocked in the morning.
  • A luncheon hostess at the inn claimed to have seen soldiers in several places: the dining room, the bar, in the upstairs and in the private dining rooms.

The queen Mary

The Queen Mary
This grand old ship is quite haunted, according to the many people who have worked on and visited the craft. Once a celebrated luxury ocean liner, when it ended its sailing days the Queen Mary was purchased by the city of Long Beach, California in 1967 and transformed into a hotel.
The most haunted area of the ship is the engine room where a 17-year-old sailor was crushed to death trying to escape a fire. Knocking and banging on the pipes around the door has been heard and recorded by numerous people. In what is now the front desk area of the hotel, visitors have seen the ghost of a "lady in white."
Ghosts of children are said to haunt the ship's pool. The spirit of a young girl, who allegedly broke her neck in an accident at the pool, has been heard asking for her mother or her doll. In the hallway of the pool's changing rooms is an area of unexplained activity. Furniture moves about by itself, people feel the touch of unseen hands and unknown spirits appear. In the front hull of the ship, a specter can sometimes be heard screaming - the pained voice, some believe, of a sailor who was killed when the Queen Mary collided with a smaller ship.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium is one of those stories you think just can not be true, it feels like it has been dreamt up by some big shot horror movie director or its a new haunted house attraction at a theme park… But Waverly Hills is a real place, the stories are real and this is certainly not a place you want to take the kids.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium like any other haunted hospital has a gruesome past and lots of horrifying stories. Waverly Hills is situated in south western Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky, it opened in 1910. The hospital was opened due to the outbreak of Tuberculosis in Jefferson County the hospital was just a small two story wooden building just enough to treat 50 patients. With increasing repairs needing to be done to the wooden buildings its was decided that a more durable and permanent building should be built. The new building was opened in March 1924.

The Haunting

The haunting of Waverly Hills Sanatorium are well known to the locals and the paranormal investigators that have visited the hospital but I will share with you some of the most horrific and terrifying stories to come out of the wards of Waverly Hills.

Room 502
The most known story about Waverly Hills is that of Room 502. A nurse, Mary Hillenburg, was found hanged in the door way of Room 502 in the year 1928, it is thought it was suicide as she had recently discovered she was pregnant out with wedlock. There is a story that Mary Hillenburg was impregnated by a doctor of Waverly Hills who was actually married. He tried an abortion which killed Mary Hillenburg in the process and to cover his back he made it look like a suicide.
Another nurse later took her own life in 1932 by throwing her self out of the window of the room that she worked in, Room 502. There are no reports of why she would have committed suicide but there was a rumour that someone did in fact push her. There are also reports that people have seen shadows move across the floor and walls in Room 502, so was this nurse pushed to her death by a ghostly spirit?…
Body Chute
The Body Chute was a tunnel which lead from the back of Waverly Hills to the train tracks at the bottom of the hill. This tunnel was built for supplies and deliveries and ease of access, but when the outbreak of Tuberculosis hit the tunnel was used to transport the dead bodies out of the hospital by a motorised trolley. This was used as the patients that were being treated would originally see all the bodies of the dead patients leave the hospital by the front, which depressed the patients and in turn would kill them.
The Tunnel now is said to be haunted by the spirits which travelled the length of that tunnel. Voices and unidentified noises have been heard in the tunnel, while cold shivers have been felt by paranormal investigators.
So as you can see Waverly Hills is not for the light hearted of us, but this is surely one of the most haunted places in America, especially when you take in to account the rumored number of deaths, 63,000.
GP Block of Meerut is known for its sighting of paranormal activities. And this is not one but a number of apparitions. There is a double storeyed building where four boys have been sitting around one lighted candle drinking beer. Also girls in red dresses have been seen coming out of the house.

In the late nineteenth century, mainly due to a great deal of press coverage, 50 Berkeley Square was known as the most haunted house in London. Years before, it had been rented by a Mr. Myers. The man had become an eccentric recluse after he was jilted by his
50 Berkeley Square
bride-to-be, and took to wandering the house each evening by candlelight. The peculiar behavior of Mr. Myers attracted the press, and gradually the tale of the 'haunted house of Berkeley Square' began to emerge.

The room in which Mr. Myers was reputed to lock himself away in during daylight hours was said to have a terrible, chilling atmosphere, although since the building has been converted for business purposes there have been no reports of untoward happenings.

A maid living in the house after Mr. Myers was found rigid with fright in the upstairs room. It appeared that something there had caused her to go mad with fear. A skeptical guest asked to stay in the room for the night, and promised to ring the servant's bell once if he was comfortable and twice should he become 'disturbed'. That night the bell rang out clearly, and after a pause, a second, more frantic ring was heard. when the residing family rushed to his assistance, they found his lifeless corpse in the bed.

These are not the only strange occurrences within the walls of 50 Berkeley Square. Many other occupants have allegedly gone mad or died suddenly. Others have told tales of a 'shapeless, slithering, horrible mass', which has left them terrified and repulsed.

The Stanley Hotel was built during the early part of 1900 by Freelan Oscar Stanley, the creator of the Stanley Steam Engine. Stanley and his wife, Flora, came to Colorado in 1903 under instructions from Stanley’s doctor to get some fresh mountain air. He suffered from tuberculosis and had been given six months to live. His doctor made arrangements for them to stay in Estes Park at a friend’s cabin for the summer. Stanley’s health improved dramatically and the couple loved the area.

Stanley Hotel Haunted

The Stanley Hotel was built on land bought from Earl Lord Dunraven, who visited the area during an 1872 hunting excursion. Dunraven built a cabin, hotel and hunting lodge for guests and then homesteaded illegally up to 6,000 acres to try to develop a private hunting preserve. When it was discovered that Dunraven was trying to swindle people out of their money and land, he was made run away.
Construction on the Stanley Hotel began in 1906. Rock and wood obtained from nearby mountains was used to build it in the Georgian style of architecture. It was completed in 1909 and held its grand opening. The hotel catered to the rich and famous and boasted electricity, running water, and telephones. It didn’t have heat, however, so it was turned into a summer resort. Below you find everything about the Stanley Hotel haunted:

The Shining Hotel

Many people are aware of The Stanley Hotel because of Stephen King’s book The Shining. While he did not write the book while staying at the hotel, he did experience some things there that influenced his writing. King was working on a story centered around a haunted amusement park that had roller coasters flying off the tracks to eat people. His friends didn’t like the story and told him so. He decided to back away for a bit and think about the story some more so King and Tabitha, his wife, traveled through Estes Park and into the Rocky Mountain National Park. Highway 34, or Trailridge Road, was closed because of bad weather. They turned back and King decided to stay at the Stanley Hotel instead. He experienced some scary things while they were there and he worked a lot of these events into The Shining. This is why the hotel is sometimes referred to as the Shining Hotel.

Stanley Hotel Haunted

There have been a number of ghosts spotted at the Stanley Hotel. One of the most well-known is F.O. Stanley himself. He’s often seen hanging around in the Billiard Room and the lobby as these were his favorite areas of the hotel when he was living. He once appeared to a group of tourists that were in the Billiard Room by materializing behind one of the tourists. Bartenders at the Stanley claim to see F.O. strolling through the bar and vanishing as they attempt to stop him at the kitchen.
In addition, Flora Stanley has been spotted quite often. She used to entertain the guests by playing the piano in the ballroom. She’s said to still do just that. Many times, her music is heard, but only the piano keys are seen moving. However, if anyone walks into the room for further investigation, the music ceases, as does the movement of the piano keys.
Various rooms in the Stanley Hotel are especially active when it comes to paranormal activity. One of these is Room 407. Lord Dunraven is said to occupy this room at times. He supposedly likes to stand in the corner of the room close to the bathroom door. One witness said that a light constantly turned on and off. When the light was off, the witnesses informed the ghost that they knew of his presence.
They also told him that they were just staying two nights and then politely requested that he please turn back on the light. That’s when the light came back on. Later, the lights were off, but noises kept coming from an elevator close by. The problem was that this particular elevator was out of order at the time. There are other reports of a ghostly face peering out of the window of Room 407 even when the room is vacant.

Stanley Hotel Hauntings

Another room that gets a lot of attention is Room 418. The spirits here are mostly from children. Cleaning staff have heard many odd sounds coming from the room along with seeing impressions on the bed when no one has been in the room. When Room 418 is occupied, the guests talk about hearing children playing at night in the hallway. There was even a couple that checked out really early in the morning because of all the noise the children had made in the hallway all night. Oddly enough, no children were staying at the hotel then.
When Stephen and Tabitha King stayed at the hotel, it was at the end of the season and they were the only two guests. They stayed in Room 217. There was a tragic accident in this room during 1911. Housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson was almost killed during a gas leak explosion in that room. She survived the explosion but died in the 1950s. Since that time there has been odd and unexplained activity in Room 217. This activity includes lights turning on and off and doors opening and closing on their own. There are also reports of guests having their suitcases unpacked and items put away.
There’s a story that the tour guides tell about a small child that’s been spotted by a lot of the staff members all over the hotel. Even Stephen King saw this child calling for his nanny on the second floor. If you want the best chance to experience some ghostly activity, the best place to stay is on the fourth floor of the hotel. This is where children are heard at all hours of the night playing and chasing each other.

Stanley Hotel Ghost

I have been looking around for some stories about The Stanley Hotel and here is one that sticks out. A person was on a ghost tour of the hotel and happened to take this picture just outside the hotel. As you can see the window has a child at it, but the figure is very hazy when it shouldn’t be because that window is actually opened. The person that took the photo investigated into this photo and called the hotel.

Enjoy the Haunted Stanley Hotel Personally

If you appreciate the chills that a true haunting can bring, you may want to visit The Stanley Hotel. This location was also one that was investigated by the Ghost Hunters from the Sy-Fy Channel. They found it to be, indeed, haunted. The hotel isn’t just open seasonally any more. It’s now open year round. You’ll find it at 333 Wonderview in Estes Park, Colorado. Be sure to call ahead for reservations.

50. Pittock Mansion

City: Portland, Ore.

A 22-room French chateau in the hills overlooking downtown Portland built in 1922, the Pittock Mansion was the site of only two deaths (original residents Georgiana [1918; age 72] and Henry Pittock [1919; age 84]) and one political scandal (Pittock was able to get a water line installed to the mansion at the city's expense, despite the property being outside city limits), but since being opened to the public in 1965, it's been host to a number of ghost sightings, including floating old ladies, boots walking without legs, portraits moving of their own accord, windows opening and shutting themselves, and, perhaps most improbably, a tree with a face in it. The Mansion was also where the 1982 slasher film Unhinged and Madonna's 1993 answer-to-Sharon-Stone's-Basic-Instinct clunker Body of Evidence were filmed.

Khooni Darwaza:
The name itself suggests that the place is eerie. The Britishers stripped and shot the 3 surviving sons of Bahadur Shah Zafar here after crushing the Sepoy mutiny. The 3 Mughal princes still haunt this doorway and wait to avenge their public humiliation. So if you are English, keep out of this haunted place in Delhi!

Jamali-Kamali Masjid
At a walking distance from the QUTUB MINAR is a park called Jamali Kamali park, situated inside the park is Jamali Kamali masjid. Jamali and Kamali are not the name of ghosts. They were two noble Sufi saints who were buried in the tomb here. But some jihns do haunt this tranquil masjid. If you visit this haunted spot, you could expect to be slapped by invisible hands and chased by the wind. This haunted place in Delhi is always avoided during the night time.

The Tree near Dwarka, Sector 9 Metro Station
Many people would have noticed a tree near dwarka sector 9 metro station, the tree is right on the middle of the road. People travelling in call centre cabs at night have experienced an energy slapping them and a woman appearing and disappearing or travelling along with the speed of the car. All this started to happen when a school girl was accidentally killed by a school cab in 2004. Yes, it sounds creepy but according to many, it’s true.

1.Balete Drive

Balete Drive is a street located in New Manila, Quezon City known for apparitions of a white lady and haunted houses which were built during the Spanish Era (1800s). New Manila has an abundance of balete trees, which, according to legend, is a time honored favorite resting spot of wandering spirits and other otherworldly paranormal beings. Many believe Aswangs and their evil spooky paranormal pets live in these haunted trees, roosting and waiting for their next victim to draw near.
Paranormal experts believe that the white lady multo (ghost) was a poor woman who was brutally raped by Japanese soldiers during the Second World War, her corpse many say was not buried properly it was thrown on the side of the road and stayed there for many years, only to be carried away by birds, rats and other creatures over time piece by piece. Some of her hair and bones are still perched high in branches as part of their nests or buried in rat holes in the ground under the trees and the street street. And this tale which is supposedly told by locals as 100% truth differs from the movie version. Her skull many say or her face which was cut away by a machete or bayonet blade was taken as his personal souvenir. Many believe she searches for the man or his descendents to exact her evil revenge upon them. Or as many believe today upon those that mock her existence.

Hiwaga sa Balete Drive (Mystery on Balete Drive) is a Filipino movie that was filmed in 1988. The white lady was played by Zsa Zsa Padilla. In the story, she died in the Spanish Era but her spirit keeps on searching for her undying love. Some of the scenes were filmed on location on Balete Drive. The movie is frequently shown in Halloween specials on the Filipino TV broadcasters ABS-CBN, Cinema One and TFC. Midnight DJ Episode 12 Babae sa Balete Drive
Witnesses of the white lady ghost, advise other motorists to avoid the street at night at all costs, especially if they are alone. If it is necessary to travel the route, they advise that the backseat of the car is fully occupied and that no one should look back or look in any mirrors. If your riding in a taxi cab you will notice the drivers edginess and fear and panic level rise. For if you or the driver see her then she will certainly mark you next for a certain violent death. Only by saying the holy rosary and fasting for the following three days after you see her might then you be spared.
Those who have seen the White Lady ghost and lived to tell of it say of her apparition that she wears a long white blood stained night gown tattered and ripped, and she has long disheveled tangled hair but has no distinguishable facial features or one covered with dripping blood.
If you are on foot or a motor bike or bicycle and she touches you then you will die on the spot. And if she chases you then it is a sign that you need to change your lifestyle or personal ways immediately and live a pious life. Many young men and women who have encountered her often will not speak of their encounters to do so brings sudden doom or bad luck.

5. Malacañang Palace

The headless ghost of Malacanang Palace

Malacañang Palace is a silent witness to those glorious days that have shaped our history. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this building has plenty of spooky stories to tell–including the ghost of no less than President Manuel L. Quezon.
Rumor has it that after Imee Marcos had a vision of Quezon in the study room, the late President Marcos seek the help of spiritualists. Employees and residents also reported sightings of President Ramon Magsaysay and other mysterious entities including the black lady of Mabini Hall, ghost of American chaplain named Father Brown, and even a kapre near the Palace’s state entrance.

4. Ozone Disco

In March 18, 1996, massive flames engulfed Ozone Disco, killing 160 people–mostly teenagers– while leaving the other 95 injured. To this day, it remains as the worst fire accident in Philippine history.
But 17 years later, the horror of that fateful night literally echoes back from Ozone’s old, dirty walls. Terrified witnesses claim to have heard heavy beat of music and muffled voices coming from the abandoned building. There are also reported sightings of ghostly figures dancing in the moonlight–a grim reminder of Ozone’s once lively past.

3. Manila Film Center

The Manila Film Center (Source: www.thepinoywarrior.com)
Built in 1981, Manila Film Center has been dubbed as the country’s largest tomb. The legend started when a scaffolding of the upper floor collapsed during the height of its construction. Some people died instantly while others suffered injuries. Threatened by an impending deadline, Marcos ordered some of the trapped workers to be buried alive. Or so the story goes.
Fortunately, the building was completed in time for the 1982 Manila International Film Festival. But since then, furious ghosts have refused to keep silent. In a 2005 documentary,Howie Severino confirmed that all 169 workers were traced and not more than a dozen died from the accident. Still, a hair-raising atmosphere at Manila Film Center is always ready to welcome those who dare to enter it.

2. Clark Air Base Hospital

clark air base hospital haunted
Hospitals are said to be gateways leading to the afterlife. Clark Air Base Hospital in Angeles City, Pampanga is no exception. But if hundreds of ghost stories are to be believed, this abandoned hospital will surely make your knees tremble. In fact, Ghost Hunters International has dubbed it as “one of the most haunted places in the world”. It also has the most documented ghost sightings ranging from violent spirit voices to mysterious shadows lurking in the corners.
By reviewing its history, it should not come as a surprise why it has been haunted by restless spirits. During the WWII, Clark Air Base Hospital served as a haven for wounded and dying American soldiers. Its frightening reputation will soon be featured in National Geographic Channel’s docu-series aptly titled “I Wouldn’t Go In There.”

1. The Diplomat Hotel

diplomat hotel
Any list of Philippine haunted buildings won’t be complete without Baguio City’s Diplomat Hotel. It’s so filled with ghosts that thrill-seekers consider it as a favorite destination. But let us explore first how it turned into a ghost building: During the early 20th century, Dominicans built it to serve as a school, monastery, and finally, as a summer retreat house.
Then, at the height of WWII, Diplomat Hotel was badly attacked by the Japanese forces. Legend has it that several priests were killed by the Japanese at the hotel ground floor and somewhere in the second floor. It is said that babies were also mercilessly killed near the fountain. These horrific murders probably explain why a headless priest and chilling cries of an infant have frequented the abandoned hotel.
In 2012, however, the haunted building was finally renovated and christened with a new name: The Baguio Dominican Heritage Hill and Nature Park. Whether the ghosts of Diplomat Hotel will remain or not is left for us to discover.

The History
The Riddle House in Palm Beach County, Florida, was originally a funeral parlor. The Victorian house was dismantled and rebuilt in Yesteryear Village at the South Florida fair grounds. In the 1920’s the house became privately owned by Karl Riddle.
The Terror
Joseph, one of Riddle’s former employees, committed suicide by hanging himself in the attic of the house. Joseph, for whatever reason, hated men, and displays this hatred by attacking men who enter the attic. One man had a lid flung at his head, and men are now no longer allowed in the attic. Other places in the house are haunted as well, with furniture being frequently moved.

1. Berry Pomeroy Castle, Totness

Although it is associated with plenty of hair-raising stories, this centuries-old castle is most famous for being home to two well-renowned female spirits: the Blue Lady and the White Lady. The Blue Lady is said to be free-roaming and haunts throughout the entire castle. With her mysterious and somewhat spellbinding presence, she lures individuals into sections of the ruin. Needless to say, if you see her, don’t follow!
The White Lady, on the other hand, is supposedly Margaret Pomeroy’s spirit. She was held captive by her envious sister and was left to die of starvation in the dungeons of the castle, where her presence lingers to this day.

Located underneath Sedlec’s Cemetery Church of All Saints, this tiny Roman Catholic chapel serves as the final dwelling place of an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 individuals. Many of their skeletons and bones have been creatively arranged in order to give the chapel a more pleasing appearance.
Despite this brave attempt at keeping the creepiness away, Sedlec Ossuary has earned the title of being the most haunted place in the world, and as such, has lured over 200,000 tourists to the area every year. Clearly, tourists just love being spooked and look upon the experience as a unique holiday treat.
3. Catacombs, Paris, France

Paris is known to be the most romantic city in the world, yet few know that it is also one of the most haunted. Several years ago, in order to provide adequate living space for the growing population, the remains of the dead were discreetly deposited along the walls of the city’s underground passageways.
The Paris Catacombs, being of a somewhat controversial nature, have been the subject of much discussion and speculation. Many tourists, along with their guides, have had a lot of other-worldly encounters as they pass the seemingly empty passageways. Feelings of being grabbed, touched, and other unexplained, odd sensations have been reported, while plenty of photos taken show ghostly apparitions and orbs. Perhaps, this is the dead’s silent protest to being set aside just to open up the city for more residents. If so, then their protest is coming across loud and clear.

Borley Rectory, located in a tiny village near Sudbury, was constructed for the Reverend Henry Bull in the year 1863. Said to be England’s Most HauntedHouse, the Borley Rectory is situated on a site where a monastery used to stand. Stories have it that a nun’s ghost can be seen patrolling the “Nun’s Walk” while she mourns the awful death of her lover. She and her beloved, who was a Borley Monastery monk, attempted to elope, but they were tracked down and captured in no time. She was thrown into and imprisoned in the cellars of the monastic buildings, while the monk was put to death for their sins. Talk about tough love!

The full story of what transpired during that time can be checked out at the Salem Witch Museum, while the spooky experience can be completed with a walk through the haunted grounds. Owing to its creepy past, Salem now serves as the gathering place of spook fanatics and horror enthusiasts all over the world.

When it comes to haunted mansions, few can compare to Australia’s Monte Cristo. Within the walls of this huge house, you’ll encounter unusual and ghostly voices, bodiless apparitions, floating ghosts, as well as phantom faces appearing out of nowhere. You should also gear yourself up for the sudden switching on and off of lights as you pass through the rooms.
What’s even scarier, if accounts are to be believed, is that you might even lose your breath and die if you step foot in the boys’ bedroom. No one really knows what’s behind the haunting, but the ghost of the owner, Mrs. Crawley, is said to be the eerie culprit.

A forest that lies at the foot of Japan’s Mount Fuji, Aokigahara is translated as the Sea of Trees. Aside from being rumored to be infested with goblins, ghosts, monsters, and weird beasts, this most haunted place in the world is also Suicide Central, as well as the site of an incredible amount of paranormal activity. In the year 2002 alone, the number of bodies discovered within the forest reached an astonishing seventy eight! With an average of 30 suicides per year, the forest is counted as the third most famous suicide site in the world.
Whether the suicides can be attributed in part to the paranormal phenomena or other unrelated reasons, no one is certain. You can only be sure that walking through this forest will be a petrifying adventure.

One of the most haunted places in the world is India’s Bhangarh Fort. Based on Indian legends, the palace is cursed in such a way that everyone who stays in it dies, with the soul remaining trapped within its walls for centuries without the possibility of a rebirth. Perhaps, the most intriguing part about the fort is that the houses in the said area can’t have roofs.
This is because if a roof is built, it collapses for no logical reason. You might also want to heed the warning about not staying in the area after the sun sets. Aside from the restlessness and anxiety that may be experienced, a safe return from Bhangarh Fort isn’t guaranteed.

It’s no wonder that plenty of terrifying novels, like Anne Rice’s, are set in this little Louisiana town.
10. Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, Oswiecim, Poland

Even without the misty apparitions, unseen but chilling presences, and other unexplainable phenomenon, this spot still packs a wallop of horror, terror, and fright. In the five years of its operations, from 1940 to 1945, the concentration camp has seen over 2 million deaths, a number which most historians consider to be a minimum, owing to the fact that no one can really be sure of the total body count during that most unfortunate time.
Anyone who has set foot in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp will most likely report a feeling of overwhelming foreboding and melancholy, and given the history of the place, it isn’t so surprising when a visitor suddenly gives in to heart-wrenching sobs and leaves the tour group in a torrent of tears.
There are a number of places on earth that will have your insides quaking with fear, no matter how brave you think you are. Yet, few can compare to the tenmost haunted places in the world on this list.
